Kratom is a native tree in Southeast Asia. The leaves of the tree contain compounds that have mind-altering or psychotropic effects. Kratom is the generic or brand name that is used in Thailand. Kratom is not an illegal substance currently, and it is very easy to buy it on the internet. Sometimes, people sell it as green powder, and the packets are typically labeled with a warning “not for human consumption. Kratom is also sold as gum or an extract. Sometimes, it goes by the following names:

•    Biak

•    Ithang

•    Kakuam

How is Kratom used?

There are different ways of using Kratom. Some people use it as a capsule, pill or an extract.  You can also chew the leaves from the tree or brew the leaves as tea after they have been dried or powdered. The leaves can also be eaten in food or smoked.

The effect of Kratom on the brain

The effects of kratom are similar to stimulants and opioids. Kratom leaves have two compounds namely 7-a-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine. The compounds interact with opioid receptors found in the brain. This produces sedation, decreased pain and pleasure especially when you consume large amounts of Kratom. Mitragynine interacts with other receptors in the brain to yield stimulant effects. When you take Kratom in small amounts, you can have increased energy levels, alertness, and sociability instead of sedation. However, some users have reported uncomfortable and dangerous side effects after using Kratom.

Health effects

Kratom may also have numerous health effects such as itching, nausea, sweating, and dry mouth, increased urination, and constipation, loss of appetite, hallucinations and seizures. Some users have also reported symptoms of psychosis.

Can Kratom be overdosed?

The food and drug administration issued a series of warnings in 2017. The warnings were about the deaths related to Kratom. Most deaths associated with Kratom result from adulterated products whereby other drugs are mixed with kratom to produce a toxic substance or taking kratom with other harmful substances such as opioids, illicit drugs, alcohol, benzodiazepines, gabapentin and other over the counter medicines. There have been some reports of packaging kratom as a dietary supplement that was laced with other substances that caused death. However, pure kratom has never been reported to cause death among users.

Can someone be addicted to kratom?

Kratom is like any other drug with opioid effects. This means that it might be addictive. Users feel withdrawal symptoms when they stop using the drug. Reports from some users show that the drug can be addictive. Some of the withdrawal symptoms of kratom include insomnia, muscle aches, irritability, aggression, hostility, emotional changes, aggression, jerky movements, and runny nose.

How to treat addiction of kratom

There are no medical treatments for the addiction to kratom. Some people looking for treatment have used behavioral therapy to treat addiction to kratom. Research is still being done to know the effective treatment for the addition of the drug.

The value of kratom

Kratom has been used in recent years as a herbal alternative to treatment in an attempt to control cravings and withdrawal symptoms caused by opioids addiction or addiction to other substances that are addictive such as alcohol. However, there is no substantial evidence to scientifically prove that kratom is safe or effective for this purpose.
